Steak and Potatoes

In Food from Home on December 29, 2011 at 22:52

Those who know me well enough will know that I’m a meat and potatoes kind of gal but boy it is tough to get decent steak in Sin, think Dxb has pampered me when it comes to my meats …

Can’t believe how many crappy steaks I have eaten in Singapore restaurants.

But thanks to my uncle who is stationed in the states and who travels back every so often. He brings in a fresh supply of choicey beef cuts whenever he comes home.

It really pays to have a good relationship the neighborhood butcher as my uncle’s favorite butch is a gem. He deep-freezes the beef that my uncle has chosen in a day in advance. He then packs the frozen beef in thermal bags with ice packs into a box. All my uncle has to do is to swing by and pay and collect the box on his way to the airport! Neat aye??

The beef arrives from the 20hour flight still frozen and is dropped off into the freezer upon arrival at home.

We defrost the meat when we feel like steak. We love this idea as we turn the odds bits of meat that we trim the steaks into beef rendang so nothing goes to waste.

The best accompaniment to steak is always potatoes. We do enjoy our potatoes with steak. We roast baby potatoes, we mash and bake our russet potatoes. The current family favorite is the truffled mash potatoes but we have started experimenting with mash sweet potatoes too. The recipes are as shown here.

Homecooked Meals

In Food from Home on December 16, 2011 at 22:48

With the schedule that keeps me from home for weeks at a time, it is indeed tough to find time to cook like I used too when I was in Dxb.

The huge array of takeout that is available in Sin is also another major factor on why I don’t have the motivation to cook.

The heavy afternoon thunderstorm on Saturday made it a lazy day at home as I didn’t feel like heading out in the rain.

Checked out the refrigerator and realized that we have chicken wings and pork neck in there.

Decided to marinate the chicken wings in the jack daniels BBQ sauce and roasting them in the oven.

The pork neck was marinated to the charsiu recipe that was blogged on earlier.

With the nice big oven at home, both can be roasted together saving time. Cooking some rice and cutting some greens made a this a ready meal.

Can’t believe that I have forgotten how therapeutic cooking can be and its time to make more time for this!

Chilling with the gals @ TCC

Check out one of the latest dessert TCC has introduced recently. I wanted to checkout the ‘caterpillar’ like dessert that is made from coffee cheese cake. Did I enjoy it? Yes I did but is it a new favorite? Nope. It was nice but not nice enough for me to make a trip down to TCC just for it!

Kaiho Sushi – Dinner

In Eating out, Outside Dubai, singapore on December 2, 2011 at 22:30

Back to Kaiho again. This time for dinner. Pls do remember to make a reservation if you are heading over for dinner so that you don’t have to wait forever for a seat.

Personally, I rather enjoy sitting at the counter rather than away in the table as it provides me with a chance to interact with the chef and it sometimes feels like you are watching the chef perform magic with the ingredients that are placed in the cases infront of the counters.

For beginners or first-timers to Kaiho, I would recommend the set or chef’s tasting menu.

More pictures from there! Enjoy!!!

If I do have to say something, this is now my regular haunt and I’m here at least once a week if I’m in town. I love love love my japanese food!
